Chris was sitting on the cot cross-legged with his left arm cradled under his right. He heard someone approach and then heard the key jangle in the door to his cell.

“Come with me.” This time it was a different officer. He got off the cot and followed, still cradling his arm. The officer led him down a hallway to a room designed for questioning a suspect. Chris sat down, and the officer left.

In front of him was the obligatory large mirror that failed to reflect all the light, and therefore presented a somewhat dimmed reflection of the room. The floor was concrete, an effort to aid in the coldness of the room. In this case, it helped Chris. He laid his left arm on the table and closed his eyes. He felt for the vibrations conducted through the table from the surrounding rooms. He also listened for the corresponding sounds. Between the two he was able to isolate a large quantity of voices and movements. He sorted them until he’d found the ones most likely to come from behind the mirror. The biggest difficulty in listening to a weak sound was not in actually hearing the sound, but in filtering out all the other sounds that covered it up. Chris’s Memorite training had allowed him to isolate and deal with various inputs. This was primarily for receiving the various forms of data that Memorites utilized, but it also worked ideally with voices.

“Is he sleeping or is that some sort of meditation?” Chris recognized the voice as the Chief’s.

“I don’t know, and I don’t care. Why isn’t Gould doing this?” Chris didn’t recognize the voice, but the reference was obviously to Detective Kevin Gould. Chris had also received a complete dossier on the town’s police.

“He was up late, and I’ll need him for something else later on this morning. Just do it and make sure Kevin gets the tape and the notes, Okay.”

“Fine, but I’m still not sure what I’m supposed to be finding out. Do you think this guy’s gonna confess to anything?”

“Not to the crime itself, but we need information about what Memorites are capable of. You saw the forensics. Whoever did this, had to not only be a crack shot, but time it down to the split-second. I want to know if the impossible things they do also involve what it would take to pull this off.”

“I’ll see what I can get.”
